Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, | 1Now we ask you, brothers, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and our gathering together to him, |
not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. | 2not to be so quickly upset or alarmed when someone claims that we said, either by some spirit, conversation, or letter that the Day of the Lord has already come. |
Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. | 3Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for it will not come unless the rebellion takes place first and the man of sin, who is destined for destruction, is revealed. |
He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship. As a result, he seats himself in the sanctuary of God and himself declares that he is God. |
Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still with you? | 5Don't you remember that I repeatedly told you about these things when I was still with you? |
And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. | 6You know what it is that is now holding him back, so that he will be revealed when his time comes. |
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now restrains it will continue until he is taken out of the way. | 7For the secret of this lawlessness is already at work, but only until the person now holding it back gets out of the way. |
And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival. | 8Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy with the breath of his mouth, rendering him powerless by the manifestation of his coming. |
The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, | 9The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, |
and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. | 10and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them. |
For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, | 11For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. |
in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness. | 12Then all who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. |
But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth. | 13At all times we are obligated to thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God chose you to be the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through faith in the truth. |
To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14With this purpose in mind, he called you through our proclamation of the gospel so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. | 15So then, brothers, stand firm, and cling to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. |
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who by grace has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope, | 16May our Lord Jesus, the Messiah himself, and may God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good word and deed. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good action and word. |
