The two kings whose countries Moses took and disposed of7. The thirty-one kings on the other side of Jordan which Joshua smote the king of Debir, one; Debir was a Canaanite city located in the hill country of Judah. It is often identified with the archaeological site of Khirbet Rabud, southwest of Hebron. Debir was previously known as Kiriath Sepher, meaning "City of Books," which suggests it may have been a center of learning or record-keeping. The conquest of Debir is significant as it demonstrates the fulfillment of God's promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan. In Joshua 10:38-39, Joshua and the Israelites captured Debir as part of their southern campaign. The mention of "one" king emphasizes the completeness of the conquest, as each king represents a distinct city-state that was subdued. Debir's capture is a testament to God's faithfulness and the Israelites' obedience to His command to take possession of the land. the king of Geder, one; Persons / Places / Events 1. Teaching Points God's Faithfulness in Fulfillment of PromisesThe listing of defeated kings, including those of Debir and Geder, is a testament to God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to Israel. Believers can trust that God will fulfill His promises in their lives as well. The Importance of Obedience The conquest of Canaan required strict obedience to God's commands. Similarly, Christians are called to obey God's Word, trusting that His ways lead to victory and blessing. Spiritual Warfare and Victory Just as Joshua led Israel in physical battles, Christians are engaged in spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:10-18 encourages believers to put on the full armor of God to stand firm against spiritual adversaries. Recording and Remembering God's Works The detailed record of victories in Joshua 12 serves as a reminder of God's mighty works. Believers are encouraged to remember and recount God's faithfulness in their own lives.Verse 13. - The king of Geder. Perhaps the same as Gederah in Joshua 15:36. If so, it is the Gedor of the Onomasticon, ten miles from Beit-Jibrin, or Eleutheropolis, now Jedireh. Conder, however, with whom Vandevelde seems to agree, places Geder in the mountain region, and identifies it with Gedor (Joshua 15:58) and the modern Jedur, in the Hebron mountain. So Keil and Delitzsch, Robinson, and others. The Gedor in 1 Chronicles 4:39 may be the same place. It is described as on the east side of the "gai," or ravine, but no clearer indication of the place is given. It is, however, unlikely that the Simeonites would have found the children of tiara undisturbed in the mountains of Hebron in the reign of Hezekiah (see vers. 40, 41). The LXX. reads Gerar, and this is very probably the true reading. There was a "Nahal," or winter torrent, there (Genesis 26:17, 19), and therefore possibly a "gal." The whole passage in 1 Chronicles should be consulted. Parallel Commentaries ...
