The term "vie" is not directly found in the Bible; however, the concept of striving or contending is present throughout the Scriptures. The idea of vying, or competing, can be understood in the context of both positive and negative connotations, depending on the motives and outcomes associated with the action.

Biblical Context of Striving and Contending

1. Positive Striving:
· The Apostle Paul often uses athletic metaphors to describe the Christian life, emphasizing the importance of striving for spiritual goals. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 , Paul writes, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize. Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable."
· This passage encourages believers to vie for spiritual rewards with the same dedication and discipline as athletes competing for a prize. The focus is on perseverance and commitment to the faith.

2. Negative Striving:
· The Bible also warns against selfish ambition and contentious behavior. In James 3:14-16 , it is written, "But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice."
· Here, the act of vying for personal gain or out of jealousy is condemned, as it leads to discord and strife within the community.

Examples of Vying in Biblical Narratives

· Jacob and Esau: The account of Jacob and Esau is a classic example of vying for a birthright and blessing. In Genesis 25:29-34, Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a meal, and later, in Genesis 27, Jacob vies for and receives Isaac's blessing through deception. This narrative highlights the consequences of striving for personal gain at the expense of family relationships.

· The Disciples' Ambition: In the New Testament, the disciples of Jesus occasionally vied for positions of honor. In Mark 10:35-37 , James and John ask Jesus to grant them seats at His right and left in His glory. Jesus responds by teaching them about servanthood, saying in Mark 10:43-44 , "But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all."

Theological Implications

The concept of vying in the Bible serves as a reminder of the importance of motives in the pursuit of goals. While striving for excellence and spiritual growth is encouraged, it must be done with humility and a heart aligned with God's will. The Scriptures consistently call believers to examine their intentions and to seek the glory of God rather than personal advancement.

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to vie for spiritual maturity and to contend for the faith with integrity and love. As Paul exhorts in Philippians 3:14 , "I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God’s heavenly calling in Christ Jesus." This pursuit should be marked by a spirit of cooperation and unity within the body of Christ, avoiding the pitfalls of selfish ambition and rivalry.
