The Holiness of God: should Produce Reverential Fear

The holiness of God is a central theme throughout the Scriptures, emphasizing His absolute purity, moral perfection, and separation from sin. This divine attribute is not merely an abstract concept but a profound reality that demands a response from humanity. The appropriate response to God's holiness is reverential fear, a deep respect and awe that acknowledges His majesty and authority.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible consistently portrays God's holiness as awe-inspiring and fear-inducing. In Isaiah 6:3-5, the prophet Isaiah encounters a vision of the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, with seraphim calling out, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth." Isaiah's immediate reaction is one of fear and recognition of his own sinfulness: "Woe is me, for I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips."

Similarly, in Exodus 3:5, when Moses approaches the burning bush, God commands him, "Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." This encounter underscores the reverence required in the presence of God's holiness.

Reverential Fear in Worship

Reverential fear is a foundational aspect of worship. Psalm 96:9 exhorts believers to "worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth." This trembling is not a paralyzing fear but a recognition of God's greatness and an acknowledgment of His rightful place as the object of worship.

The New Testament echoes this sentiment. In Hebrews 12:28-29, believers are encouraged to "offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." This passage highlights the seriousness with which worship should be approached, rooted in an understanding of God's holy nature.

The Fear of the Lord as Wisdom

The fear of the Lord is frequently associated with wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This fear is not merely an emotional response but a foundational attitude that shapes one's entire life, leading to wise decisions and righteous living.

Consequences of Ignoring God's Holiness

Scripture also warns of the consequences of disregarding God's holiness. In Leviticus 10:1-3, Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, offer unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to His command. As a result, fire comes out from the presence of the Lord and consumes them. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the seriousness of approaching God without reverence.

God's Holiness and Redemption

While God's holiness exposes human sinfulness, it also underscores the need for redemption. The sacrificial system in the Old Testament and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the New Testament reveal God's provision for reconciling sinful humanity to Himself. In 1 Peter 1:15-16, believers are called to reflect God's holiness in their lives: "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Conclusion

The holiness of God is a profound and awe-inspiring attribute that should produce reverential fear in the hearts of believers. This fear is not one of terror but of deep respect and acknowledgment of God's majesty and authority. It is foundational to worship, wisdom, and righteous living, and it underscores the need for redemption through Jesus Christ.
