Seeking God: The Wicked: Refuse, Through Pride
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

In the biblical narrative, the concept of seeking God is a central theme, often juxtaposed with the refusal of the wicked to do so. This refusal is frequently attributed to pride, a condition of the heart that leads individuals away from the humility necessary to seek and submit to God.

Pride as a Barrier to Seeking God

Pride is depicted in Scripture as a significant barrier that prevents individuals from seeking God. It is an attitude of self-sufficiency and arrogance that blinds individuals to their need for divine guidance and redemption. The psalmist captures this sentiment in Psalm 10:4 : "In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God." This verse highlights the self-centered nature of the wicked, whose prideful disposition leaves no space for God in their lives.

Biblical Examples of Pride Leading to Refusal

Throughout the Bible, there are numerous examples of individuals and groups who, through pride, refuse to seek God. One prominent example is Pharaoh in the book of Exodus. Despite witnessing the mighty acts of God through the plagues, Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, and he refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of the God of Israel (Exodus 5:2). His prideful stance ultimately led to his downfall and the suffering of his people.

Similarly, the narrative of King Nebuchadnezzar in the book of Daniel illustrates the destructive nature of pride. Nebuchadnezzar's pride in his accomplishments led him to exalt himself above God, resulting in his temporary downfall and madness until he acknowledged God's sovereignty (Daniel 4:30-37).

Consequences of Prideful Refusal

The refusal to seek God due to pride carries significant consequences, both in this life and beyond. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." This principle is evident in the lives of those who, through pride, reject God's authority and guidance. Their refusal leads to spiritual blindness, moral decay, and ultimately, divine judgment.

The New Testament also addresses the issue of pride as a barrier to seeking God. In James 4:6 , it is written, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage underscores the reality that pride not only prevents individuals from seeking God but also places them in opposition to Him.

The Call to Humility

While pride leads the wicked to refuse God, Scripture consistently calls individuals to humility as the pathway to seeking Him. Humility involves recognizing one's limitations and need for God's wisdom and grace. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 , God promises, "if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land."

The biblical call to humility is a call to lay aside pride and self-reliance, acknowledging that true wisdom and life are found in seeking God.
