Riches: The Wicked: Heap Up
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

In the biblical narrative, the accumulation of riches by the wicked is a recurring theme that highlights the moral and spiritual dangers associated with wealth when it is pursued or used unrighteously. The Scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings that illustrate the futility and ultimate judgment that befalls those who heap up riches through wicked means.

Old Testament Insights

The Old Testament frequently addresses the issue of wealth amassed by the wicked. In the book of Job, a profound discourse on the prosperity of the wicked is presented. Job laments the apparent success of the ungodly, stating, "Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power? Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not upon them" (Job 21:7-9). Despite their temporary prosperity, Job acknowledges that their end is destruction, as God reserves punishment for them.

The Psalms also reflect on this theme. Psalm 73, attributed to Asaph, describes the psalmist's struggle with the prosperity of the wicked: "For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong" (Psalm 73:3-4). However, the psalmist ultimately recognizes that their wealth is fleeting and that they are set on slippery ground, destined for ruin.

Proverbs, a book of wisdom, warns against the deceitfulness of ill-gotten wealth. Proverbs 13:11 states, "Dishonest wealth will dwindle, but what is earned through hard work will be multiplied" . This proverb underscores the transient nature of riches acquired through unrighteous means and the enduring value of integrity.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament continues to address the issue of wealth and the wicked. Jesus, in His teachings, often warned about the dangers of riches. In the Parable of the Rich Fool, found in Luke 12:16-21, Jesus tells of a man who stored up abundant crops, only to lose his life that very night. The parable concludes with the admonition, "This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God" (Luke 12:21).

The Apostle James provides a stern warning to the wealthy who exploit others and live in luxury at the expense of righteousness. In James 5:1-5, he writes, "Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days" . James emphasizes the impending judgment on those who have amassed wealth through injustice and oppression.

Theological Reflections

The biblical perspective on the wicked heaping up riches is not merely a condemnation of wealth itself but a critique of the heart's posture towards it. The Scriptures consistently teach that wealth, when pursued or used without regard for God's righteousness and justice, leads to spiritual peril. The wicked, in their pursuit of riches, often neglect the weightier matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness, as highlighted by Jesus in Matthew 23:23.

Furthermore, the Bible calls believers to a different standard, one that values eternal treasures over temporal wealth. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus instructs, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" .

In summary, the biblical narrative consistently portrays the heaping up of riches by the wicked as a path fraught with spiritual danger and ultimate judgment. The Scriptures call for a heart aligned with God's values, prioritizing eternal riches over temporal gain.

For God gives to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
