Privileges of Saints: Having God for Their: King

The concept of God as King is a profound privilege for the saints, offering them a unique relationship with the Creator that is both intimate and authoritative. This divine kingship is a central theme throughout Scripture, emphasizing God's sovereign rule, protection, and guidance over His people.

God as King in Scripture

The Bible frequently refers to God as King, highlighting His supreme authority and governance over all creation. In Psalm 47:7, it is declared, "For God is King of all the earth; sing profound praises to Him." This verse underscores the universal reign of God, affirming His dominion over every nation and people.

In the Old Testament, God's kingship is often associated with His covenant relationship with Israel. In 1 Samuel 12:12, the Israelites acknowledge God as their King, even as they request a human monarch: "But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was coming against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king." This passage reflects the tension between human authority and divine kingship, yet it affirms God's ultimate role as the true King of His people.

The Privilege of Divine Kingship

For the saints, having God as their King is a privilege that encompasses several key aspects:

1. Protection and Security: As King, God provides protection and security for His people. Psalm 91:1-2 assures believers of God's safeguarding presence: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, 'You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'" The imagery of a fortress conveys the safety and refuge found under God's sovereign rule.

2. Guidance and Wisdom: God's kingship also implies His role as the ultimate source of wisdom and guidance. In Proverbs 21:1, it is written, "The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases." This verse illustrates God's ability to direct the hearts of earthly rulers, and by extension, His people, according to His divine will.

3. Justice and Righteousness: The reign of God as King is characterized by perfect justice and righteousness. Psalm 89:14 declares, "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; loving devotion and truth go before You." Saints can trust in God's fair and just rule, knowing that He will ultimately vindicate and uphold righteousness.

4. Eternal Reign: Unlike earthly kings, God's reign is eternal and unchanging. In Revelation 11:15, the eternal nature of God's kingship is proclaimed: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever." This assurance of God's everlasting rule provides hope and confidence to the saints, knowing that their King will never be dethroned.

The Response of the Saints

Recognizing God as their King, the saints are called to respond with loyalty, obedience, and worship. In Deuteronomy 10:12-13, the call to allegiance is clear: "And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God by walking in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD that I am giving you this day for your own good?"

The privilege of having God as King invites the saints into a life of devotion and service, acknowledging His rightful place as the sovereign ruler of their lives. Through this relationship, they experience the fullness of His kingdom blessings, living under the benevolent and just reign of their divine King.
