Privileges of Saints: Having God for Their: Father

The concept of God as Father is a profound privilege bestowed upon the saints, reflecting a deep and intimate relationship between the Creator and His children. This relationship is foundational to the Christian faith and is richly illustrated throughout Scripture.

1. Adoption as Children of God: The privilege of having God as Father begins with the doctrine of adoption. Believers are not naturally born as children of God but are adopted into His family through faith in Jesus Christ. As stated in John 1:12-13 , "But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God."

2. Intimacy and Access: Having God as Father grants believers direct access to Him, characterized by intimacy and confidence. In Romans 8:15 , Paul writes, "For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'" This term "Abba" signifies a close, personal relationship, akin to calling God "Daddy."

3. Provision and Care: As a loving Father, God provides for the needs of His children. Jesus assures His followers of God's provision in Matthew 6:31-32 : "Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them."

4. Discipline and Guidance: The Fatherhood of God also includes His role in disciplining and guiding His children. Hebrews 12:6-7 states, "For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives. Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?"

5. Inheritance and Future Glory: As children of God, believers are heirs to His promises and future glory. Romans 8:17 declares, "And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him."

6. Security and Assurance: The relationship with God as Father provides believers with security and assurance of their salvation. In John 10:28-29 , Jesus promises, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand."

7. Love and Acceptance: The love of God the Father is unconditional and everlasting. 1 John 3:1 marvels at this love: "Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are!"

The privilege of having God as Father is a central tenet of the Christian faith, offering believers a profound sense of identity, belonging, and hope. Through this relationship, the saints experience the fullness of God's love, care, and eternal promises.
