Church of Israel: Worship of, Consisted in Sacrifice

The worship practices of ancient Israel, as outlined in the Old Testament, were deeply rooted in the sacrificial system established by God. This system was central to the religious life of the Israelites and served as a means of atonement, thanksgiving, and communion with God. The sacrificial rites were meticulously detailed in the Mosaic Law, primarily in the books of Leviticus, Exodus, and Numbers.

Sacrificial System Overview

The sacrificial system was instituted by God as a way for the Israelites to maintain a covenant relationship with Him. Sacrifices were offered for various purposes, including sin offerings, burnt offerings, peace offerings, and grain offerings. Each type of sacrifice had specific regulations and symbolic meanings.

1. Burnt Offerings (Olah): The burnt offering was a voluntary act of worship, atonement for unintentional sin, and an expression of devotion to God. The entire animal, except for its hide, was consumed by fire on the altar, symbolizing the worshiper's total surrender to God. Leviticus 1:3-4 states, "If one's offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer an unblemished male. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, that he may be accepted by the LORD. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so that it may be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him."

2. Sin Offerings (Chatat): Sin offerings were mandatory for atonement of specific unintentional sins and ceremonial impurities. The blood of the sacrifice played a crucial role, as it was sprinkled on the altar to purify and consecrate. Leviticus 4:20 explains, "He shall do with this bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; he shall do the same with it. Thus the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven."

3. Peace Offerings (Zebach Shelamim): These were voluntary offerings expressing thanksgiving and fellowship. Part of the sacrifice was consumed by fire, part was eaten by the priests, and part was shared in a communal meal by the offerer and his family. Leviticus 3:1 describes, "If one's offering is a peace offering and he offers an animal from the herd, whether male or female, he must present it without blemish before the LORD."

4. Grain Offerings (Minchah): Grain offerings accompanied animal sacrifices and were a tribute to God, acknowledging His provision. They consisted of fine flour, oil, and frankincense, and a portion was burned on the altar. Leviticus 2:1-2 states, "When anyone presents an offering of grain to the LORD, his offering shall consist of fine flour. He is to pour oil on it, put frankincense on it, and bring it to Aaron's sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the fine flour and oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn this memorial portion on the altar as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD."

Theological Significance

The sacrificial system underscored the holiness of God and the sinfulness of humanity. It highlighted the need for atonement and the seriousness of sin, as well as God's provision for reconciliation. The shedding of blood was a central theme, as Hebrews 9:22 affirms, "According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."

Christological Fulfillment

The sacrificial system foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who offered Himself once for all as the perfect atonement for sin. Hebrews 10:10 declares, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." The sacrifices of the Old Testament pointed to the need for a Savior and were fulfilled in the person and work of Christ, who established a new covenant through His blood.

In summary, the worship of the Church of Israel, centered on sacrifice, was a divinely ordained system that maintained the covenant relationship between God and His people, foreshadowing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
