Topical Encyclopedia
The term "trustest" is an archaic form of the verb "trust," often found in older English translations of the Bible. It signifies placing confidence or reliance upon someone or something. In the context of Scripture, trust is a fundamental aspect of the believer's relationship with God, reflecting faith, dependence, and assurance in His character and promises.

Biblical Usage and Context

1. Trust in God: Trusting in God is a central theme throughout the Bible. It involves relying on His wisdom, strength, and timing. Proverbs 3:5-6 exhorts believers, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." This passage highlights the importance of wholehearted trust in God rather than human understanding.

2. Trust in God's Promises: The Bible is replete with promises from God, and trust is the means by which believers claim these promises. Hebrews 10:23 encourages, "Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful." Trusting in God's promises is an act of faith that acknowledges His faithfulness and sovereignty.

3. Trust in Times of Trouble: The Psalms frequently express trust in God during difficult times. Psalm 56:3-4 states, "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" This demonstrates that trust in God provides peace and courage in the face of fear and adversity.

4. Trust and Obedience: Trust in God is often linked with obedience to His commands. Deuteronomy 28:1-2 promises blessings for obedience, "If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all His commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the LORD your God." Trusting God involves a commitment to follow His ways, believing that His commands are for our good.

5. Trust in Human Relationships: While the Bible primarily emphasizes trust in God, it also addresses trust in human relationships. Proverbs 31:11 speaks of the virtuous woman, "The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will lack nothing of value." This illustrates the importance of trustworthiness and fidelity in relationships.

6. Warnings Against Misplaced Trust: Scripture warns against placing trust in anything other than God. Psalm 146:3 advises, "Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal man, who cannot save." Trusting in human strength, wealth, or wisdom is portrayed as futile and ultimately disappointing.

Theological Implications

Trust is a vital component of faith, reflecting a believer's confidence in God's nature and His divine plan. It is both a gift and a discipline, requiring believers to continually place their hope and reliance on God, regardless of circumstances. Trust in God is not passive but active, involving prayer, obedience, and a steadfast commitment to His Word. Through trust, believers experience God's peace, guidance, and provision, affirming His role as a faithful and loving Father.
