The term "troublest" is an archaic form of the word "trouble," often found in older English translations of the Bible. It refers to causing distress, difficulty, or disturbance. In the context of Scripture, trouble is a recurring theme that reflects the human condition and the challenges faced by individuals and communities. The Bible addresses trouble in various forms, including personal, communal, and spiritual troubles, and offers guidance on how to respond to such challenges.

Biblical Context and Usage

1. Personal Trouble: The Bible frequently addresses the personal troubles faced by individuals. In the Old Testament, figures like Job and David experienced profound personal distress. Job, a man described as "blameless and upright" (Job 1:1), faced immense suffering and questioned the reasons for his troubles. David, in the Psalms, often cried out to God in times of personal distress, seeking deliverance and comfort. Psalm 25:17 states, "The troubles of my heart increase; free me from my distress."

2. Communal Trouble: The nation of Israel often faced communal troubles, including oppression, exile, and internal strife. The prophets frequently warned of impending trouble due to the people's disobedience to God's commandments. For instance, Jeremiah 30:7 speaks of a time of great trouble for Jacob, yet also promises deliverance: "How awful that day will be! None will be like it; it is the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he will be saved out of it."

3. Spiritual Trouble: Spiritual trouble arises from the struggle against sin and the forces of evil. The New Testament emphasizes the spiritual battle faced by believers. Ephesians 6:12 reminds Christians that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Responses to Trouble

1. Trust in God: The Bible consistently encourages believers to trust in God during times of trouble. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness is a central theme in responding to trouble.

2. Prayer and Supplication: Prayer is a vital response to trouble. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs believers, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

3. Perseverance and Hope: The New Testament encourages perseverance in the face of trouble, emphasizing the hope found in Christ. Romans 5:3-5 states, "Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."

4. Community Support: The early church exemplified the importance of community support during times of trouble. Acts 2:44-45 describes how believers shared their possessions and supported one another: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need."

Conclusion

While the Bible acknowledges the reality of trouble in the world, it also provides a framework for understanding and responding to it. Through trust in God, prayer, perseverance, and community support, believers are equipped to navigate the challenges they face, holding onto the hope and peace offered through faith in Jesus Christ.
