The Privilege of Being Chosen

The concept of being chosen by God is a profound theme woven throughout the biblical narrative, reflecting the divine initiative in establishing a relationship with humanity. This privilege is not merely a status but a calling to fulfill God's purposes and to live in accordance with His will.

Old Testament Foundations

The idea of being chosen is prominently introduced in the Old Testament with the calling of Abraham. In Genesis 12:1-3, God calls Abram, later named Abraham, to leave his country and promises to make him a great nation. This calling is not based on Abraham's merit but on God's sovereign choice. The nation of Israel, descended from Abraham, is repeatedly described as God's chosen people. Deuteronomy 7:6 states, "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession, above all the peoples on the face of the earth."

The election of Israel is further emphasized in passages like Isaiah 41:8-9, where God refers to Israel as His servant whom He has chosen. This choice is rooted in God's love and faithfulness to the covenant He established with their forefathers.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of being chosen extends to all who are in Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 1:4 , "For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence." This election is not limited to ethnic Israel but includes Gentiles, reflecting the universal scope of God's redemptive plan.

The privilege of being chosen is also highlighted in 1 Peter 2:9 , where believers are described as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession." This passage underscores the identity and purpose of those who are chosen: to declare the praises of Him who called them out of darkness into His marvelous light.

The Purpose of Being Chosen

Being chosen by God carries with it a responsibility to live in a manner worthy of the calling. In Deuteronomy 10:15-16 , God’s choice of Israel is linked to a call for obedience and love: "Yet the LORD has set His affection on your fathers and loved them, and He has chosen you, their descendants, above all peoples, as it is today. Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and stiffen your necks no more."

Similarly, in the New Testament, the chosen are called to live holy and blameless lives. Colossians 3:12 exhorts believers, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience."

The Assurance of Being Chosen

The privilege of being chosen also provides assurance and comfort. Romans 8:33 poses the rhetorical question, "Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies." This assurance is rooted in the unchanging nature of God's purpose and His sovereign will.

Moreover, the chosen are assured of God's continual presence and guidance. In John 15:16 , Jesus tells His disciples, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will remain—so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you."

Conclusion

The privilege of being chosen by God is a central theme in Scripture, reflecting His sovereign grace and purpose. It is a calling to live in holiness, a source of assurance, and a testament to God's unchanging love and faithfulness.
