The term "succoured" refers to the act of providing assistance, support, or relief to someone in need. In the context of the Bible, it often denotes divine intervention or the help extended by God or His people to those who are suffering or in distress. The concept of succor is deeply embedded in the biblical narrative, illustrating God's compassion and the call for His followers to emulate this attribute.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the idea of succor is frequently associated with God's deliverance of Israel from various adversities. For instance, in the Book of Exodus, God hears the cries of the Israelites and sends Moses to lead them out of Egyptian bondage, providing them with succor in their time of need (Exodus 3:7-10). The Psalms also reflect this theme, as the psalmists often cry out for God's help and deliverance. Psalm 46:1 declares, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble."

The prophets also speak of God's succor, emphasizing His role as a protector and provider. Isaiah 41:10 reassures, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness."

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the concept of succor is exemplified in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus' acts of healing, feeding the hungry, and comforting the sorrowful are manifestations of divine succor. In Matthew 11:28 , Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest, offering spiritual succor: "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

The Apostle Paul also speaks of succor in his epistles. In 2 Corinthians 6:2 , he writes, "For He says: 'In the time of favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.' Behold, now is the time of favor; now is the day of salvation!" Here, Paul emphasizes the immediacy and availability of God's help and salvation.

Practical Implications for Believers

Believers are called to be instruments of God's succor in the world. The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates the call to provide aid and compassion to those in need, regardless of social or ethnic boundaries. The early church exemplified this by caring for widows, orphans, and the poor, as seen in Acts 6:1-7.

The Epistle of James underscores the importance of practical faith, stating in James 1:27 , "Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." This reflects the biblical mandate for believers to actively engage in acts of mercy and support for those in need.

In summary, the concept of succor in the Bible is a profound expression of God's love and care, calling His followers to be conduits of His compassion and assistance to others.
