The concept of being "steered" in the Bible often relates to guidance, direction, and the influence of God or His appointed leaders over the lives of individuals and nations. The term itself may not appear frequently in the text, but the underlying principle is evident throughout Scripture.

Divine Guidance and Leadership

In the Bible, God is frequently depicted as the ultimate guide and shepherd of His people. Psalm 23:1-3 illustrates this beautifully: "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness for the sake of His name." Here, the imagery of God as a shepherd steering His flock is a powerful representation of divine guidance.

Human Leaders as Instruments of Steering

God often uses human leaders to steer His people according to His will. Moses is a prime example, as he was chosen to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness. In Exodus 3:10 , God commands Moses, "So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt." Moses' leadership was instrumental in steering the Israelites towards the Promised Land.

Similarly, Joshua was appointed to steer the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses' death. Joshua 1:6-7 records God's charge to Joshua: "Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them. Above all, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you."

The Role of Wisdom and Counsel

The Bible also emphasizes the importance of wisdom and counsel in steering one's life. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." This passage underscores the necessity of relying on God's wisdom rather than solely on human understanding.

The book of Proverbs frequently highlights the value of wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14 states, "For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors comes deliverance." This suggests that seeking and heeding wise advice is crucial for proper steering in life.

The Holy Spirit as a Guide

In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit plays a significant role in steering believers. Jesus promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to guide His followers. In John 16:13 , Jesus says, "However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come." The Holy Spirit is thus portrayed as an active guide, steering believers in truth and righteousness.

Steering Away from Sin

The Bible also addresses the need to be steered away from sin and towards righteousness. In 1 Corinthians 10:13 , Paul writes, "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it." This passage reassures believers that God provides a way to steer clear of sin.

Conclusion

The biblical concept of being steered encompasses divine guidance, the role of human leaders, the importance of wisdom and counsel, the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit, and the necessity of steering away from sin. Through these means, God directs His people towards His purposes and plans.
