The term "spendeth" is an archaic form of the verb "spend," which appears in various contexts throughout the Bible. It generally refers to the act of using or expending resources, whether they be financial, physical, or spiritual. The concept of spending is often linked to themes of stewardship, generosity, and the wise use of resources, reflecting the biblical principles of responsible living and giving.

Financial Spending

In the realm of financial spending, the Bible provides guidance on the prudent use of money and resources. Proverbs 21:20 states, "Precious treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man consumes them." This verse highlights the importance of wise financial management and the dangers of reckless spending. The wise person is depicted as one who saves and manages resources carefully, while the foolish person is characterized by wastefulness.

The New Testament also addresses financial spending, particularly in the context of generosity and support for others. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 , Paul writes, "Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver." This passage emphasizes the importance of intentional and joyful giving, suggesting that spending should be done with a willing heart and a spirit of generosity.

Spiritual and Personal Spending

Beyond financial resources, the concept of spending extends to the use of one's time, energy, and spiritual gifts. Ephesians 5:15-16 advises believers, "Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Here, the notion of "redeeming the time" can be understood as spending one's time wisely and purposefully, in alignment with God's will.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the idea of spending oneself for the sake of others. In 2 Corinthians 12:15 , he expresses his willingness to invest in the spiritual well-being of the Corinthian church: "So I will most gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?" This reflects the Christian call to self-sacrifice and service, where personal resources, including time and energy, are spent for the benefit of others.

Warnings Against Wasteful Spending

The Bible also contains warnings against wasteful and indulgent spending. In the parable of the prodigal son, found in Luke 15:11-32, Jesus tells the account of a young man who squanders his inheritance on reckless living. This narrative serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of irresponsible spending and the importance of repentance and reconciliation.

James 4:3 further warns against spending with wrong motives: "And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures." This verse underscores the need for pure intentions in the use of resources, aligning one's desires with God's purposes rather than selfish indulgence.

Conclusion

The biblical perspective on spending encompasses a broad range of applications, from financial stewardship to the use of personal and spiritual resources. The Scriptures encourage believers to spend wisely, generously, and with a heart aligned to God's will, while also providing warnings against wastefulness and selfishness. Through these teachings, the Bible offers a framework for understanding the responsible and purposeful use of all that God has entrusted to His people.
