Introduction

Serving the poor is a central theme in the Bible, reflecting God's heart for justice, mercy, and compassion. The Scriptures consistently call believers to care for the marginalized and needy, emphasizing that such service is integral to a life of faith and obedience to God.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays a strong foundation for serving the poor, with numerous laws and teachings that underscore God's concern for the disadvantaged. In Deuteronomy 15:11, the Israelites are commanded, "For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you to open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor in your land" . This directive highlights the perpetual presence of poverty and the ongoing responsibility of God's people to provide assistance.

The Law of Moses includes specific provisions for the poor, such as leaving the gleanings of the harvest for the needy (Leviticus 19:9-10) and the Year of Jubilee, which provided economic relief and restoration (Leviticus 25). These laws reflect a divine mandate for social justice and economic equity.

The prophets also echo this call to serve the poor, often linking it to true worship and righteousness. Isaiah 58:6-7 declares, "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?" . Here, serving the poor is presented as an essential expression of genuine faith.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament continues and expands upon the Old Testament's emphasis on serving the poor. Jesus Christ, in His earthly ministry, exemplified compassion for the marginalized and taught His followers to do likewise. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus states, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3), highlighting the spiritual value of humility and dependence on God.

Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) serves as a powerful illustration of loving one's neighbor, transcending ethnic and social boundaries to provide aid to those in need. Furthermore, in Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus identifies Himself with the poor and needy, saying, "For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you looked after Me; I was in prison and you visited Me" . This passage underscores the eternal significance of serving the poor, as acts of kindness toward them are seen as acts of service to Christ Himself.

The early church also prioritized care for the poor, as seen in Acts 2:44-45, where believers shared their possessions to ensure that no one among them was in need. The apostle Paul, in his epistles, encourages generosity and support for the poor, as in Galatians 2:10, where he recalls the apostles' instruction to "remember the poor" .

Theological Implications

Serving the poor is not merely a social obligation but a theological imperative that reflects the character of God. It is an expression of God's love and justice, demonstrating His concern for all people, especially the vulnerable. The Bible presents serving the poor as a tangible manifestation of faith, where believers are called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to engage in acts of service and charity, both individually and collectively, as part of their Christian witness. This includes providing for the physical needs of the poor, advocating for justice, and addressing systemic issues that contribute to poverty. The church is called to be a community of compassion, reflecting God's kingdom values in a broken world.
