In the context of the Bible, the concept of a "list" can be understood as a structured enumeration of items, names, or events. Lists are used throughout the Scriptures to convey order, importance, and divine instruction. They serve as a means to organize information, highlight significant details, and provide clarity to the narrative or teachings.

Genealogical Lists

One of the most prominent uses of lists in the Bible is genealogical records. These lists trace the lineage of key biblical figures, emphasizing the fulfillment of God's promises through specific family lines. For example, the genealogy of Jesus Christ is meticulously recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Matthew 1:1-17 provides a list of Jesus' ancestors, underscoring His rightful place in the line of David and Abraham: "This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1).

Tribal and Census Lists

The Old Testament contains numerous lists related to the tribes of Israel and their censuses. These lists were essential for organizing the nation, distributing land, and assigning roles within the community. The Book of Numbers, for instance, begins with a census of the Israelites, detailing the number of men able to serve in the army from each tribe (Numbers 1:2-3). Such lists highlight the importance of order and preparation in fulfilling God's commands.

Lists of Laws and Commandments

The Bible also includes lists of laws and commandments, which serve as a guide for righteous living. The Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21, are perhaps the most well-known list of divine laws. These commandments provide a moral framework for the Israelites and, by extension, for all believers: "And God spoke all these words, saying..." (Exodus 20:1).

Lists of Blessings and Curses

In Deuteronomy 28, Moses presents the Israelites with a list of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. This chapter outlines the consequences of following or forsaking God's covenant, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of faithfulness: "Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commandments I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth" (Deuteronomy 28:1).

Lists of Spiritual Gifts and Virtues

The New Testament contains lists that describe spiritual gifts and virtues, which are essential for the edification of the Church. In 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, Paul enumerates various spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the common good. Similarly, Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit, virtues that characterize a life led by the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23).

Lists of Sins and Vices

Conversely, the Bible also provides lists of sins and vices to warn believers against ungodly behavior. In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, offering a clear delineation of actions that are contrary to God's will: "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery..." (Galatians 5:19).

Conclusion

Lists in the Bible serve as a vital tool for conveying God's order, instruction, and expectations. They provide structure and clarity, helping believers understand their heritage, responsibilities, and the path to righteous living. Through genealogies, laws, blessings, spiritual gifts, and warnings, biblical lists underscore the importance of obedience and faithfulness in the life of a believer.

LIST

A variant of "lust" (see LUST), meaning "to wish," found in the King James Version of Matthew 17:12 parallel Mark 9:13 John 3:8, as translation of thelo, and in James 3:4 as translation of boulomai. The last case the English Revised Version has rendered "will," and the American Standard Revised Version has made the same change throughout. The word is obsolete in modern English, but John 3:8 is still used proverbially, "The wind bloweth where it listeth."
