The term "resides" in the context of the Bible often refers to the dwelling or abiding presence of God, His Spirit, or His people in a particular place. This concept is central to understanding the relationship between God and His creation, as well as the spiritual life of believers.

Divine Presence

In the Old Testament, God's presence is frequently associated with specific locations. For instance, God resides in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple in Jerusalem. Exodus 25:8 states, "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them." This indicates God's desire to reside among His people, Israel, and to be intimately involved in their lives.

The Ark of the Covenant is another significant symbol of God's residing presence. In 1 Samuel 4:4 , it is described as "the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who is enthroned between the cherubim." Here, God's presence is depicted as residing above the Ark, signifying His holiness and authority.

The Holy Spirit

In the New Testament, the concept of God residing takes on a more personal and spiritual dimension with the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises His disciples that the Holy Spirit will reside within them. John 14:17 states, "the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you." This indwelling of the Holy Spirit signifies a new era in which God's presence resides within believers, guiding and empowering them.

Believers as the Temple

The Apostle Paul expands on the idea of God's residing presence by describing believers themselves as the temple of God. In 1 Corinthians 3:16 , Paul writes, "Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?" This metaphor emphasizes the holiness and sanctity of the believer's body as a dwelling place for God's Spirit.

Eternal Residence

The ultimate fulfillment of God's residing presence is found in the promise of eternal life with Him. Revelation 21:3 declares, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'" This vision of the New Jerusalem portrays a future where God resides permanently with His people, eradicating the separation caused by sin.

Conclusion

The concept of "resides" in the Bible underscores the intimate and ongoing relationship between God and His people. From the Old Testament Tabernacle to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers, and ultimately to the eternal dwelling with God, the theme of residence highlights God's desire to be present with His creation.
