Strife among the Corinthian Christians is a significant theme addressed by the Apostle Paul in his letters to the church at Corinth. The city of Corinth was a major commercial hub in ancient Greece, known for its wealth, diversity, and moral challenges. The church in Corinth, established by Paul during his missionary journeys, reflected the complexities and issues of its surrounding culture, leading to various internal conflicts and divisions.

Division and Quarrels

The Apostle Paul addresses the issue of strife directly in his first letter to the Corinthians. He expresses concern over reports of divisions and quarrels among the believers. In 1 Corinthians 1:10-11 , Paul writes, "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction. My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you."

The divisions in the Corinthian church were primarily centered around allegiance to different leaders. Some claimed to follow Paul, others Apollos, Cephas (Peter), or Christ directly (1 Corinthians 1:12). This factionalism was a source of strife, undermining the unity that Paul sought to cultivate among the believers.

Carnality and Immaturity

Paul attributes the strife in Corinth to spiritual immaturity and carnality. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 , he states, "Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual, but as worldly—as infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready, for you are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and dissension among you, are you not worldly? Are you not walking in the way of man?"

The Corinthian Christians' inability to rise above their worldly inclinations resulted in jealousy and dissension, which Paul identifies as evidence of their spiritual infancy. This immaturity hindered their growth and ability to live out the gospel effectively.

The Role of Wisdom and Humility

Paul emphasizes the importance of godly wisdom and humility as antidotes to strife. He contrasts the wisdom of the world with the wisdom of God, urging the Corinthians to seek the latter. In 1 Corinthians 3:18-19 , he advises, "Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise in this age, he should become a fool, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight."

Humility is further underscored in Paul's teaching on love in 1 Corinthians 13, where he describes love as patient, kind, and not self-seeking or easily angered. This chapter serves as a corrective to the strife and divisions, pointing the Corinthians toward a more excellent way of living in community.

The Lord's Supper and Unity

The strife in Corinth also manifested during the observance of the Lord's Supper. Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their selfish behavior and lack of consideration for one another during this sacred meal. In 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 , he writes, "In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved."

Paul calls the Corinthians to examine themselves and discern the body of Christ rightly, emphasizing the communal and unifying nature of the Lord's Supper. This call to unity is a recurring theme in Paul's letters, as he seeks to guide the Corinthian church toward harmony and mutual edification.

Conclusion

The strife among the Corinthian Christians serves as a cautionary tale and a call to unity for believers. Through his letters, Paul provides timeless principles for overcoming division and fostering a spirit of love and humility within the body of Christ.
