Topical Encyclopedia
Moab, a nation descended from Lot, Abraham's nephew, is frequently mentioned in the Bible, particularly in the context of its interactions and conflicts with Israel. The Moabites were known for their military prowess and were often a formidable force in the region.

Historical Context

The Moabites occupied a region east of the Dead Sea, in what is now modern-day Jordan. Their land was fertile and strategically located, making them both prosperous and a target for neighboring nations. The Moabites were often in conflict with Israel, as seen in various biblical accounts.

Biblical References

1. Judges 3:12-30: The Moabites, under King Eglon, oppressed Israel for eighteen years. Eglon gathered the Ammonites and Amalekites to defeat Israel and took possession of the City of Palms. The Israelites cried out to the Lord, who raised up Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, to deliver them. Ehud assassinated Eglon and led Israel to victory over the Moabites, securing peace for eighty years.

2. 2 Samuel 8:2: King David defeated the Moabites and subjected them to servitude. The verse states, "He also defeated the Moabites and measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. He measured two lengths of line to put to death, and a full length to keep alive. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute."

3. 2 Kings 3:4-27: During the reign of King Jehoram of Israel, the Moabites, led by King Mesha, rebelled against Israel. Jehoram allied with Jehoshaphat of Judah and the king of Edom to suppress the rebellion. The coalition forces faced a dire situation due to lack of water, but the Lord provided a miraculous supply. The Moabites were defeated, but in desperation, Mesha sacrificed his firstborn son on the city wall, causing great wrath against Israel, and they withdrew.

4. Isaiah 15-16: The prophet Isaiah prophesied the downfall of Moab, describing the lamentation and destruction that would come upon its cities and warriors. Isaiah 15:4 states, "Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out, and their hearts tremble."

5. Jeremiah 48: The prophet Jeremiah also foretold the destruction of Moab, emphasizing the futility of their warriors. Jeremiah 48:41 states, "Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are seized. In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor."

Characteristics of Moab's Warriors

Moab's warriors were known for their courage and strength, often depicted as valiant and fierce in battle. However, their reliance on false gods and their pride often led to their downfall, as seen in the prophetic judgments pronounced against them. The Moabites' military might was ultimately no match for the power of the God of Israel, who delivered His people from their oppression and fulfilled His prophetic word against Moab.

Cultural and Religious Influence

The Moabites worshiped Chemosh, their national deity, and their religious practices often included human sacrifices, as evidenced by King Mesha's desperate act. This idolatry and the associated moral corruption were condemned by the prophets and contributed to their eventual judgment and decline.

Legacy

The legacy of Moab's warriors is a testament to the transient nature of earthly power and the sovereignty of God over the nations. Their account serves as a reminder of the consequences of pride and idolatry, as well as the faithfulness of God to His covenant people.
