Topical Encyclopedia LewdnessLewdness, in the biblical context, refers to behavior that is morally impure, indecent, or sexually unrestrained. It is often associated with acts that are considered offensive to God and contrary to His commandments. The Bible frequently addresses lewdness as a serious sin, warning believers to avoid such conduct. In the Old Testament, lewdness is often linked with idolatry and the worship of false gods. The Israelites were repeatedly admonished for engaging in lewd acts as part of pagan rituals. For instance, in Ezekiel 16:27, God rebukes Jerusalem for its unfaithfulness, saying, "Behold, therefore, I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd conduct." The New Testament continues to warn against lewdness, emphasizing the need for purity and holiness among believers. In Galatians 5:19-21, lewdness is listed among the "acts of the flesh," which are in opposition to the fruit of the Spirit: "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." The apostle Paul also exhorts believers in Ephesians 5:3-4, "But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving." Abominations The term "abomination" in the Bible refers to actions, practices, or objects that are detestable and repugnant to God. Abominations are often associated with idolatry, sexual immorality, and other grave sins that violate God's laws and principles. In the Old Testament, the book of Leviticus outlines various practices considered abominable, particularly those related to idolatry and improper worship. Leviticus 18:22-23, for example, states, "You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination. You must not have sexual relations with any animal, defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion." The prophets frequently condemned the abominations of the nations surrounding Israel, warning that such practices would lead to judgment and destruction. In Isaiah 66:3, God expresses His disdain for hypocritical worship, saying, "Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man; whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog's neck; whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig's blood; whoever makes a memorial offering of frankincense is like one who blesses an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations." In the New Testament, abominations are still recognized as actions that separate individuals from God. In Revelation 21:8, those who commit abominations are listed among those who will face the second death: "But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death." The Bible consistently calls believers to reject lewdness and abominations, urging them to live lives that reflect God's holiness and righteousness. |
