Josheb-basshebeth, also known as Jashobeam, is a prominent figure in the Old Testament, recognized as one of King David's mighty warriors. He is listed as the chief of the "Three," a group of elite warriors who were renowned for their extraordinary feats of bravery and skill in battle. The account of Josheb-basshebeth is primarily found in 2 Samuel 23:8 and 1 Chronicles 11:11.

In 2 Samuel 23:8 , it is written: "These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahkemonite was chief of the Three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed at one time." This passage highlights his exceptional prowess in combat, as he is credited with single-handedly defeating eight hundred men in a single encounter. This remarkable feat underscores his status as a legendary warrior and a key figure in David's military exploits.

The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 11:11 refers to him as Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, and describes a similar act of valor: "This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers; he wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time." The variation in the number of men defeated may be attributed to differences in textual traditions or scribal transmission over time.

Josheb-basshebeth's role as the leader of the Three places him at the pinnacle of David's military hierarchy, indicating not only his martial abilities but also his leadership qualities. The Three, along with the Thirty, formed the core of David's mighty men, who were instrumental in establishing and securing his kingdom. These warriors were characterized by their loyalty, courage, and dedication to David, often risking their lives to achieve victory in battle.

The accounts of Josheb-basshebeth and his fellow mighty men serve to illustrate the divine favor and protection that accompanied David throughout his reign. Their exploits are seen as a testament to God's provision and the fulfillment of His promises to David, as well as a demonstration of the strength and unity of Israel under David's leadership.

Josheb-basshebeth's legacy as a mighty warrior is preserved in the biblical narrative as an example of extraordinary faith and valor. His account, along with those of the other mighty men, continues to inspire readers with themes of courage, loyalty, and the power of God working through His chosen leaders.

JOSHEB-BASSHEBETH

jo-sheb-ba-she'-beth (yoshebh ba-shebheth): This proper name in the Revised Version (British and American) takes the place of the translation "that sat in the seat" in the King James Version (2 Samuel 23:8). The phrase so rendered is meaningless. The text has evidently suffered corruption. There can be no doubt that a proper name is intended. This, according to the parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 11:11, should be Jashobeam. Some scholars think that this also is a corruption, and by a process of emendation arrive at "Eshbaal" as the correct name (Driver, Hebrew Text of S; SBOT, at the place).
