In the biblical context, "honours" refers to the respect, esteem, and recognition given to individuals, God, or principles that are deemed worthy of such acknowledgment. The concept of honour is deeply rooted in the Scriptures and is often associated with righteousness, obedience, and reverence.

Honour to God

The Bible emphasizes the importance of honouring God above all. This is seen in the call to worship, obedience, and reverence for His name and commandments. In the Old Testament, the Israelites are repeatedly instructed to honour God through their actions and worship. In the New Testament, Jesus reiterates the importance of honouring God, as seen in Matthew 15:8-9 : "‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’"

Honour to Parents

One of the Ten Commandments explicitly instructs individuals to honour their parents. Exodus 20:12 states, "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you." This commandment underscores the importance of family structure and respect within the household. The Apostle Paul reiterates this in Ephesians 6:2-3 : "Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth."

Honour Among People

Honour is also a social principle that governs interactions among individuals. Proverbs 3:35 states, "The wise will inherit honor, but fools are held up to shame." This suggests that honour is a reward for wisdom and righteous living. In the New Testament, believers are encouraged to honour one another and live in harmony. Romans 12:10 advises, "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another."

Honour in Leadership

Scripture also addresses the honour due to leaders and authorities. Romans 13:7 instructs, "Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due." This passage highlights the importance of respecting and honouring those in positions of authority as part of a Christian's duty.

Honour and Humility

The Bible often links honour with humility, suggesting that true honour comes from a humble heart. Proverbs 15:33 states, "The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, and humility comes before honor." This principle is echoed in the teachings of Jesus, who exemplified humility and servanthood as the path to true honour.

Honour and the Church

Within the church, honour is given to those who serve faithfully. 1 Timothy 5:17 says, "Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching." This reflects the value placed on spiritual leadership and the dedication of those who guide the congregation.

In summary, the biblical concept of honours encompasses a wide range of relationships and responsibilities, all rooted in the recognition of worthiness, respect, and reverence. Whether directed towards God, family, leaders, or fellow believers, honour is a fundamental principle that reflects the character and values upheld in Scripture.
