Gloriest

The term "gloriest" is an archaic form of the verb "glory," which means to take great pride or pleasure in something. In the context of the Bible, to glory is to boast or exult, often in the Lord or in the works of God. The concept of glory is central to biblical theology, reflecting both the majesty of God and the appropriate response of His people to His greatness.

Biblical Usage

The word "gloriest" appears in the King James Version of the Bible, but in modern translations like the Berean Standard Bible, it is often rendered as "boast" or "glory." The term is used to describe both appropriate and inappropriate forms of boasting.

Appropriate Glorying

1. In the Lord: The Bible encourages believers to glory in the Lord rather than in their own achievements or possessions. Jeremiah 9:23-24 states, "This is what the LORD says: 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the wealthy man in his riches. But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things,' declares the LORD."

2. In the Cross of Christ: The Apostle Paul emphasizes glorying in the cross of Christ as the foundation of Christian faith. Galatians 6:14 reads, "But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."

3. In Weakness: Paul also speaks of glorying in his weaknesses, as they reveal the power of Christ. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 , he writes, "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me."

Inappropriate Glorying

1. In Human Wisdom and Strength: The Bible warns against glorying in human wisdom, strength, or riches, as these are fleeting and ultimately insignificant compared to the eternal glory of God. As noted in Jeremiah 9:23-24, true glory is found in knowing and understanding the Lord.

2. In Personal Achievements: James 4:16 cautions against boasting in personal plans and achievements, stating, "As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil."

Theological Significance

The concept of glorying in the Bible underscores the importance of humility and the recognition of God's sovereignty. It calls believers to shift their focus from self-centered pride to God-centered worship and gratitude. By glorying in the Lord, Christians acknowledge His supreme authority and the grace that He extends to humanity through Jesus Christ.

Practical Application

For believers, the call to glory in the Lord serves as a reminder to prioritize spiritual values over worldly success. It encourages a life of worship, gratitude, and reliance on God's strength rather than one's own. This perspective fosters a community of faith that exalts God above all else and seeks to reflect His glory in every aspect of life.
