for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. | 9for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! | 9for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned. | 9Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. | 9I suffer for it to the point of being bound like a criminal, but God's message is not bound. |

The Lord's Approved Workman 14Keep reminding God's people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. | 14Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. | 14Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. | 14Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. | 14Remind them of these things, charging them before God not to fight about words; this is in no way profitable and leads to the ruin of the hearers. |
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. | 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. | 15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. | 15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. | 15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. |
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. | 16But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, | 16But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, | 16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. | 16But avoid irreverent, empty speech, for this will produce an even greater measure of godlessness. |
Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, | 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, | 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, | 17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; | 17And their word will spread like gangrene; Hymenaeus and Philetus are among them. |
who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. | 18who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. | 18men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. | 18Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. | 18They have deviated from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and are overturning the faith of some. |
Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness." | 19But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” | 19Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness." | 19Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. | 19Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, having this inscription: The Lord knows those who are His, and Everyone who names the name of the Lord must turn away from unrighteousness. |
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. | 20Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. | 20Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. | 20But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. | 20Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver bowls, but also those of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. |
Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. | 21Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. | 21Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. | 21If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. | 21So if anyone purifies himself from anything dishonorable, he will be a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. |
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. | 22So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. | 22Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. | 22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. | 22Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. |
Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. | 23Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. | 23But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. | 23But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. | 23But reject foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they breed quarrels. |
And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. | 24And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, | 24The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, | 24And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, | 24The Lord's slave must not quarrel, but must be gentle to everyone, able to teach, and patient, |
Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, | 25correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, | 25with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, | 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; | 25instructing his opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance leading them to the knowledge of the truth. |
and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. | 26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. | 26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. | 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. | 26Then they may come to their senses and escape the Devil's trap, having been captured by him to do his will. |
