New Living Translation | New International Version |
Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever? | 1For the director of music. A maskil of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of Ahimelek." Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? |
All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies. | 2You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. |
You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. Interlude | 3You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. |
You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! | 4You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue! |
But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude | 5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. |
The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, | 6The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, |
“Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.” | 7"Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!" |
But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love. | 8But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. |
I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people. | 9For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good. |
