New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever? | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul and said to him, "David has come to the house of Ahimelech." Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long. |
All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies. | 2Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit. |
You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. Interlude | 3You love evil more than good, Falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah. |
You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! | 4You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. |
But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude | 5But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah. |
The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, | 6The righteous will see and fear, And will laugh at him, saying, |
“Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.” | 7"Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches And was strong in his evil desire." |
But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love. | 8But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the lovingkindness of God forever and ever. |
I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people. | 9I will give You thanks forever, because You have done it, And I will wait on Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your godly ones. |
