New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Then Elihu said: | 1Elihu spake moreover, and said, |
“Do you think it is right for you to claim, ‘I am righteous before God’? | 2Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's? |
For you also ask, ‘What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’ | 3For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin? |
“I will answer you and all your friends, too. | 4I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee. |
Look up into the sky, and see the clouds high above you. | 5Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou. |
If you sin, how does that affect God? Even if you sin again and again, what effect will it have on him? | 6If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him? |
If you are good, is this some great gift to him? What could you possibly give him? | 7If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand? |
No, your sins affect only people like yourself, and your good deeds also affect only humans. | 8Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man. |
“People cry out when they are oppressed. They groan beneath the power of the mighty. | 9By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. |
Yet they don’t ask, ‘Where is God my Creator, the one who gives songs in the night? | 10But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night; |
Where is the one who makes us smarter than the animals and wiser than the birds of the sky?’ | 11Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? |
And when they cry out, God does not answer because of their pride. | 12There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. |
But it is wrong to say God doesn’t listen, to say the Almighty isn’t concerned. | 13Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it. |
You say you can’t see him, but he will bring justice if you will only wait. | 14Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him. |
You say he does not respond to sinners with anger and is not greatly concerned about wickedness. | 15But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity: |
But you are talking nonsense, Job. You have spoken like a fool.” | 16Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge. |
