Job 35

New Living TranslationKing James Bible
Then Elihu said:1Elihu spake moreover, and said,
“Do you think it is right for you to claim, ‘I am righteous before God’?2Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?
For you also ask, ‘What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’3For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?
“I will answer you and all your friends, too.4I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.
Look up into the sky, and see the clouds high above you.5Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.
If you sin, how does that affect God? Even if you sin again and again, what effect will it have on him?6If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?
If you are good, is this some great gift to him? What could you possibly give him?7If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?
No, your sins affect only people like yourself, and your good deeds also affect only humans.8Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.
“People cry out when they are oppressed. They groan beneath the power of the mighty.9By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
Yet they don’t ask, ‘Where is God my Creator, the one who gives songs in the night?10But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
Where is the one who makes us smarter than the animals and wiser than the birds of the sky?’11Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
And when they cry out, God does not answer because of their pride.12There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.
But it is wrong to say God doesn’t listen, to say the Almighty isn’t concerned.13Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
You say you can’t see him, but he will bring justice if you will only wait.14Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
You say he does not respond to sinners with anger and is not greatly concerned about wickedness.15But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:
But you are talking nonsense, Job. You have spoken like a fool.”16Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
