New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
The wicked run away when no one is chasing them, but the godly are as bold as lions. | 1The wicked flee, though no one pursues, but the righteous are bold like a lion. |
When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability. | 2When a land transgresses, it gains a succession of leaders, but with an understanding and knowledgeable man, its stability endures. |
A poor person who oppresses the poor is like a pounding rain that destroys the crops. | 3A poor man who oppresses the weak is like a rainstorm that destroys all the crops. |
To reject the law is to praise the wicked; to obey the law is to fight them. | 4Those who forsake the Law praise the wicked, but whoever keeps it fights them. |
Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the LORD understand completely. | 5Evil men don't understand justice, but whoever seeks the LORD understands it all. |
Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich. | 6It's better to be poor and live a blameless life than to be rich but crooked in one's lifestyle. |
Young people who obey the law are wise; those with wild friends bring shame to their parents. | 7Whoever keeps the Law is a discerning son, but whoever keeps company with gluttons brings shame to his father. |
Income from charging high interest rates will end up in the pocket of someone who is kind to the poor. | 8Whoever gains wealth by charging exorbitant interest collects it for someone who is kind to the poor. |
God detests the prayers of a person who ignores the law. | 9If someone quits listening to the Law even his prayer is detestable. |
Those who lead good people along an evil path will fall into their own trap, but the honest will inherit good things. | 10Whoever misleads the upright along an evil way will himself fall into his own pit, but the blameless will inherit what is good. |
Rich people may think they are wise, but a poor person with discernment can see right through them. | 11The rich man may be wise in his own opinion; but a discerning, poor man sees through him. |
When the godly succeed, everyone is glad. When the wicked take charge, people go into hiding. | 12When the righteous are victorious, there is great glory, but when the wicked arise, men hide themselves. |
People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy. | 13Whoever hides his transgressions will not succeed, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will find mercy. |
Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble. | 14Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into disaster. |
A wicked ruler is as dangerous to the poor as a roaring lion or an attacking bear. | 15A roaring lion and a charging bear— that's what a wicked tyrant is over poor people. |
A ruler with no understanding will oppress his people, but one who hates corruption will have a long life. | 16A Commander-in-Chief who is a cruel oppressor lacks understanding, but whoever hates unjust gain will live longer. |
A murderer’s tormented conscience will drive him into the grave. Don’t protect him! | 17A guilty man tormented by bloodshed will be a lifelong fugitive; let no one support him. |
The blameless will be rescued from harm, but the crooked will be suddenly destroyed. | 18Whoever lives blamelessly will be delivered, but whoever is perverted will fall without warning. |
A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty. | 19Whoever works his farmland will have abundant food, but whoever chases fantasies will become very poor. |
The trustworthy person will get a rich reward, but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble. | 20The faithful man will prosper with blessings, but whoever is in a hurry to get rich will not escape punishment. |
Showing partiality is never good, yet some will do wrong for a mere piece of bread. | 21To show partiality isn't good, yet for a piece of bread the valiant will transgress. |
Greedy people try to get rich quick but don’t realize they’re headed for poverty. | 22The miser is in a hurry to get wealthy, but he isn't aware that poverty will catch up with him. |
In the end, people appreciate honest criticism far more than flattery. | 23Whoever rebukes a man will later on find more favor than someone who flatters with his words. |
Anyone who steals from his father and mother and says, “What’s wrong with that?” is no better than a murderer. | 24Whoever steals from his father or mother but claims, "It's no sin," is a companion to someone who demolishes. |
Greed causes fighting; trusting the LORD leads to prosperity. | 25An arrogant man stirs up dissension, but anyone who trusts in the LORD prospers. |
Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe. | 26Whoever trusts in himself is foolish, but whoever lives wisely will be kept safe. |
Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed. | 27Whoever gives to the poor will never lack, but whoever shuts his eyes to their poverty will be cursed. |
When the wicked take charge, people go into hiding. When the wicked meet disaster, the godly flourish. | 28When the wicked rise to power, people hide themselves, but when the wicked perish, the righteous increase. |
