| 1This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham : | 1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. |
| 2Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers. | 2Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, |
| 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar). Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram. | 3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, |
| 4Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon. | 4and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, |
| 5Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab). Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth). Obed was the father of Jesse. | 5and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, |
| 6Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah). | 6and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, |
| 7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa. | 7and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, |
| 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram. Jehoram was the father of Uzziah. | 8and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, |
| 9Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah. | 9and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, |
| 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah. | 10and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, |
| 11Josiah was the father of Jehoiachin and his brothers (born at the time of the exile to Babylon). | 11and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. |
| 12After the Babylonian exile: Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel. | 12And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, |
| 13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor. | 13and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, |
| 14Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the father of Eliud. | 14and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, |
| 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob. | 15and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, |
| 16Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah. | 16and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. |
| 17All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah. The Birth of Jesus the Messiah | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. |
| 18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. |
| 19Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. | 19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. |
| 20As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. | 20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
| 21And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” | 21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” |
| 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: | 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: |
| 23“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” | 23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). |
| 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. | 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, |
| 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. | 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. |
