New Living Translation | English Standard Version |
When everything was ready, the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. | 1Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. |
Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. | 2Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, |
Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. | 3and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. |
Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.” | 4For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” |
So Noah did everything as the LORD commanded him. | 5And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him. |
Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth. | 6Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. |
He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives. | 7And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him went into the ark to escape the waters of the flood. |
With them were all the various kinds of animals—those approved for eating and for sacrifice and those that were not—along with all the birds and the small animals that scurry along the ground. | 8Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground, |
They entered the boat in pairs, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. | 9two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah. |
After seven days, the waters of the flood came and covered the earth. | 10And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth. |
When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky. | 11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. |
The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights. | 12And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. |
That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives. | 13On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, |
With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal—domestic and wild, large and small—along with birds of every kind. | 14they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. |
Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes. | 15They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. |
A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD closed the door behind them. | 16And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in. |
For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth. | 17The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. |
As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface. | 18The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. |
Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth, | 19And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. |
rising more than twenty-two feet above the highest peaks. | 20The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. |
All the living things on earth died—birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people. | 21And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. |
Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died. | 22Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. |
God wiped out every living thing on the earth—people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat. | 23He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. |
And the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days. | 24And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days. |
