A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the land of Egypt: |
“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men | 2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their fathers' families, counting the names of every male one by one. |
twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops, | 3You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years old or more by their military divisions--everyone who can serve in Israel's army. |
and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe. | 4A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral family. |
“These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur | 5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben; |
Simeon Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai | 6Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai from Simeon; |
Judah Nahshon son of Amminadab | 7Nahshon son of Amminadab from Judah; |
Issachar Nethanel son of Zuar | 8Nethanel son of Zuar from Issachar; |
Zebulun Eliab son of Helon | 9Eliab son of Helon from Zebulun; |
Ephraim son of Joseph Elishama son of Ammihud Manasseh son of Joseph Gamaliel son of Pedahzur | 10from the sons of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud from Ephraim, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur from Manasseh; |
Benjamin Abidan son of Gideoni | 11Abidan son of Gideoni from Benjamin; |
Dan Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai | 12Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai from Dan; |
Asher Pagiel son of Ocran | 13Pagiel son of Ochran from Asher; |
Gad Eliasaph son of Deuel | 14Eliasaph son of Deuel from Gad; |
Naphtali Ahira son of Enan | 15Ahira son of Enan from Naphtali. |
These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.” | 16These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel's clans." |
So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders, | 17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, |
and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one, | 18and they assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestry by their clans and their ancestral families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years old or more, |
just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai. | 19just as the LORD commanded Moses. He registered them in the Wilderness of Sinai: |
This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families : Tribe Number Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,500 | 20The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |

Gad 45,650 | 24The descendants of Gad: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 25those registered for the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650. |
Judah 74,600 | 26The descendants of Judah: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 27those registered for the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600. |
Issachar 54,400 | 28The descendants of Issachar: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 29those registered for the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400. |
Zebulun 57,400 | 30The descendants of Zebulun: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 31those registered for the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400. |
Ephraim son of Joseph 40,500 | 32The descendants of Joseph: The descendants of Ephraim: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 33those registered for the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500. |
Manasseh son of Joseph 32,200 | 34The descendants of Manasseh: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 35those registered for the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200. |
Benjamin 35,400 | 36The descendants of Benjamin: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |

Dan 62,700 | 38The descendants of Dan: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |

Asher 41,500 | 40The descendants of Asher: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 41those registered for the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500. |
Naphtali 53,400 | 42The descendants of Naphtali: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
| 43those registered for the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400. |
These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent. | 44These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral family. |
They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war. | 45So all the Israelites twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in Israel's army, were registered by their ancestral families. |
The total number was 603,550. | 46All those registered numbered 603,550. |
But this total did not include the Levites. | 47But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe. |
For the LORD had said to Moses, | 48For the LORD had told Moses: |
“Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites. | 49"Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the other Israelites. |
Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it. | 50Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it. |
Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death. | 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to stop at a campsite, the Levites are to set it up. Any unauthorized person who comes near it is to be put to death. |
Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner. | 52"The Israelites are to camp by their military divisions, each man with his encampment and under his banner. |
But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.” | 53The Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community." |
So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 54The Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
