| 2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. | 2through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. |
| 3They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. | 3They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth. |
| 4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. | 4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, |

| 7Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. | 7But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness. |
| 8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” | 8For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. |
| 9This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. | 9This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. |
| 10This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers. | 10For this reason we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. |

| 12Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. | 13Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. | 13Until I come, give your attention to public reading, exhortation, and teaching. |
| 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. | 14Don't neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. |
| 15Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. | 15Practice these things; be committed to them, so that your progress may be evident to all. |
| 16Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. | 16Pay close attention to your life and your teaching; persevere in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. |
