Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help!1For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea.
Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles.2Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught
My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.3at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they release disaster upon me and revile me in their anger.
My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me.4My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.5Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me.
Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest!6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.
I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude7How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah
How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred.8I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”
Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city.9O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city.10Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within.
Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.11Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets.
It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them.12For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.
Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.13But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend.
What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.14We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.
Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them.15Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.
But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me.16But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice.17Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.
He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me.18He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.19God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises.20My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!21His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.
Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.22Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me.23But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.
