New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! | 1For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea. |
Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. | 2Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught |
My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. | 3at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they release disaster upon me and revile me in their anger. |
My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. | 4My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death assail me. |
Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. | 5Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me. |
Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! | 6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. |
I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude | 7How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah |
How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. | 8I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.” |
Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. | 9O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. |
Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. | 10Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within. |
Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. | 11Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets. |
It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. | 12For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide. |
Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. | 13But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend. |
What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. | 14We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God. |
Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. | 15Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes. |
But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. | 16But I call to God, and the LORD saves me. |
Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice. |
He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. | 18He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me. |
God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. | 19God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God. |
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. | 20My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. |
His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! | 21His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed. |
Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. | 22Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. |
But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. | 23But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You. |
