1After this, David defeated and subdued the Philistines by conquering Gath and its surrounding towns. | 1Some time later, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its villages from the hand of the Philistines. |
2David also conquered the land of Moab, and the Moabites who were spared became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money. | 2David also defeated the Moabites, and they became subject to David and brought him tribute. |
3David also destroyed the forces of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, as far as Hamath, when Hadadezer marched out to strengthen his control along the Euphrates River. | 3As far as Hamath, David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah, who had marched out to establish his dominion along the Euphrates River. |
4David captured 1,000 chariots, 7,000 charioteers, and 20,000 foot soldiers. He crippled all the chariot horses except enough for 100 chariots. | 4David captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand charioteers, and twenty thousand foot soldiers, and he hamstrung all the horses except a hundred he kept for the chariots. |
5When Arameans from Damascus arrived to help King Hadadezer, David killed 22,000 of them. | 5When the Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men. |
6Then he placed several army garrisons in Damascus, the Aramean capital, and the Arameans became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money. 8along with a large amount of bronze from Hadadezer’s towns of Tebah and Cun. 10he sent his son Joram to congratulate King David for his successful campaign. Hadadezer and Toi had been enemies and were often at war.
