New King James Version | New International Version |
Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; | 1Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. |
She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table. | 2She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. |
She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, | 3She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, |
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, | 4"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, |
“Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. | 5"Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. |
Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding. | 6Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight." |
“He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. | 7Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. |
Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. | 8Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. |
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. | 9Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. |
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. | 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. |
For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. | 11For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. |
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.” | 12If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. |
A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. | 13Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. |
For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, | 14She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, |
To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: | 15calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, |
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, | 16"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, |
“Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” | 17"Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!" |
But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell. | 18But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead. |
