| 1And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. | 1Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly--mere infants in Christ. |
| 2I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; | 2I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. |
| 3for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? | 3You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? |
| 4For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? | 4For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere human beings? |
| 5Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? | 5What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. |
| 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. | 6I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. |
| 7So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. | 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. |
| 8Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. | 8The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. |

| 14If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. | 14If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. |
| 15If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. | 15If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved--even though only as one escaping through the flames. |
| 16Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? | 16Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? |
| 17If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. | 17If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for God's temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. |
| 18Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. | 18Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become "fools" so that you may become wise. |
| 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; | 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness"; |
| 20and again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” | 20and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile." |
| 21Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: | 21So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, |
| 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. | 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours, |
| 23And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. | 23and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. |
