New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. | 1Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. |
I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; | 2I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, |
for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? | 3because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? |
For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? | 4For whenever someone says, "I'm with Paul," and another, "I'm with Apollos," are you not unspiritual people? |
Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? | 5What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. |
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. | 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. |
So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. | 7So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. |
Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. | 8Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. |
For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. | 9For we are God's coworkers. You are God's field, God's building. |
According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. | 10According to God's grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. |
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. | 11For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. |
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, | 12If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, |
each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. | 13each one's work will become obvious, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one's work. |
If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. | 14If anyone's work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. |
If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. | 15If anyone's work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire. |
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? | 16Don't you yourselves know that you are God's sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you? |
If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. | 17If anyone destroys God's sanctuary, God will destroy him; for God's sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are. |
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. | 18No one should deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he can become wise. |
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; | 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness; |
and again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” | 20and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are meaningless. |
Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: | 21So no one should boast in human leaders, for everything is yours-- |
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. | 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come--everything is yours, |
And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. | 23and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. |
