New King James Version | NET Bible |
The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: | 1So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you: |
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; | 2Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly. |
nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; | 3And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock. |
and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. | 4Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away. |
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” | 5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, | 6And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand |
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. | 7by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you. |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. | 8Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. |
Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. | 9Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering. |
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. | 10And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. |
To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To him belongs the power forever. Amen. |
By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. | 12Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. |
She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son. | 13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | 14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
