Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said: | 1Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, |
“As God lives, who has taken away my justice, And the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, | 2As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; |
As long as my breath is in me, And the breath of God in my nostrils, | 3All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; |
My lips will not speak wickedness, Nor my tongue utter deceit. | 4My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. |
Far be it from me That I should say you are right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. |
My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go; My heart shall not reproach me as long as I live. | 6My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live. |
“May my enemy be like the wicked, And he who rises up against me like the unrighteous. | 7Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous. |
For what is the hope of the hypocrite, Though he may gain much, If God takes away his life? | 8For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? |
Will God hear his cry When trouble comes upon him? | 9Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? |
Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call on God? | 10Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? |
“I will teach you about the hand of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. |
Surely all of you have seen it; Why then do you behave with complete nonsense? | 12Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain? |
“This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, received from the Almighty: | 13This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. |
If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. | 14If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. |
Those who survive him shall be buried in death, And their widows shall not weep, | 15Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. |
Though he heaps up silver like dust, And piles up clothing like clay— | 16Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; |
He may pile it up, but the just will wear it, And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. |
He builds his house like a moth, Like a booth which a watchman makes. | 18He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh. |
The rich man will lie down, But not be gathered up; He opens his eyes, And he is no more. | 19The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not. |
Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. |
The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; It sweeps him out of his place. | 21The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place. |
It hurls against him and does not spare; He flees desperately from its power. | 22For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. |
Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place. | 23Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place. |
