For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. | 1O LORD, you have searched me and known me! |
You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. | 2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. |
You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. | 3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. |
For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. | 4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. |
You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. | 5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. |
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. | 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. |
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? | 7Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? |
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. | 8If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! |
If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, | 9If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, |
Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. | 10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. |
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; | 11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” |
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. | 12even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. |
For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. | 13For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. |
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. | 14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. |
My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. | 15My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. |
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. | 16Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. |
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! | 17How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! |
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. | 18If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. |
Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God! Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men. | 19Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me! |
For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain. | 20They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. |
Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate You? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? | 21Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? |
I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. | 22I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies. |
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; | 23Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! |
And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. | 24And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! |
