and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, | 2And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, |
"Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. | 3"Our father died in the wilderness, although he was not part of the company of those that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died for his own sin, and he had no sons. |
Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." | 4Why should the name of our father be lost from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among the relatives of our father." |
So Moses brought their case before the LORD, | 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD. |
and the LORD said to him, | 6The LORD said to Moses: |
"What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and give their father's inheritance to them. | 7"The daughters of Zelophehad have a valid claim. You must indeed give them possession of an inheritance among their father's relatives, and you must transfer the inheritance of their father to them. |
"Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. | 8And you must tell the Israelites, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you must transfer his inheritance to his daughter; |
If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. | 9and if he has no daughter, then you are to give his inheritance to his brothers; |
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. | 10and if he has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his father's brothers; |
If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" | 11and if his father has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his relative nearest to him from his family, and he will possess it. This will be for the Israelites a legal requirement, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. | 12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range, and see the land I have given to the Israelites. |
After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, | 13When you have seen it, you will be gathered to your ancestors, as Aaron your brother was gathered to his ancestors. |
for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) | 14For in the wilderness of Zin when the community rebelled against me, you rebelled against my command to show me as holy before their eyes over the water--the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin." |
Moses said to the LORD, | 15Then Moses spoke to the LORD: |
"May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community | 16"Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all humankind, appoint a man over the community, |
to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd." | 17who will go out before them, and who will come in before them, and who will lead them out, and who will bring them in, so that the community of the LORD may not be like sheep that have no shepherd." |
So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. | 18The LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is such a spirit, and lay your hand on him; |
Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. | 19set him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community, and commission him publicly. |
Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. | 20Then you must delegate some of your authority to him, so that the whole community of the Israelites will be obedient. |
He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in." | 21And he will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the decision of the Urim. At his command they will go out, and at his command they will come in, he and all the Israelites with him, the whole community." |
Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. | 22So Moses did as the LORD commanded him; he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community. |
Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses. | 23He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD commanded, by the authority of Moses. |
