New International Version | NET Bible |
When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, | 1When humankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, |
the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. | 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose. |
Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years." | 3So the LORD said, "My spirit will not remain in humankind indefinitely, since they are mortal. They will remain for 120 more years." |
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. | 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days (and also after this) when the sons of God were having sexual relations with the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children. They were the mighty heroes of old, the famous men. |
The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. | 5But the LORD saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time. |
The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. | 6The LORD regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended. |
So the LORD said, "I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created--and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground--for I regret that I have made them." | 7So the LORD said, "I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them." |
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. | 8But Noah found favor in the sight of the LORD. |
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. | 9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a godly man; he was blameless among his contemporaries. He walked with God. |

Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. | 11The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence. |
God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. | 12God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful. |
So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. | 13So God said to Noah, "I have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I am about to destroy them and the earth. |
So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. | 14Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and out. |
This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high. | 15This is how you should make it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. |
Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. | 16Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches from the top. Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks. |
I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. | 17I am about to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them. Everything that is on the earth will die, |
But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. | 18but I will confirm my covenant with you. You will enter the ark--you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. |
You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. | 19You must bring into the ark two of every kind of living creature from all flesh, male and female, to keep them alive with you. |
Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. | 20Of the birds after their kinds, and of the cattle after their kinds, and of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you so you can keep them alive. |
You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them." | 21And you must take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten, and gather it together. It will be food for you and for them. |
Noah did everything just as God commanded him. | 22And Noah did all that God commanded him--he did indeed. |
