All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood.1Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.
In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.'"2"In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.'"
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel.3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there4Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.
said to David, "You will not get in here." Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion--which is the City of David.5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).
David had said, "Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.6Now David had said, "Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander." Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.
David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David.7Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.
He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.8He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.
And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him.9David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.
These were the chiefs of David's mighty warriors--they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the LORD had promised--10Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
this is the list of David's mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.11These constitute the list of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he killed at one time.
Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors.12After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.
He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.13He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled before the Philistines.
But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.14They took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and struck down the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great victory.
Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.15Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim.
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.16David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!"17David had a craving and said, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"
So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD.18So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD;
"God forbid that I should do this!" he said. "Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?" Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.19and he said, "Be it far from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.
Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three.20As for Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty, and he swung his spear against three hundred and killed them; and he had a name as well as the thirty.
He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.21Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored and became their commander; however, he did not attain to the first three.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab's two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.22Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day.
And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.23He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature five cubits tall. Now in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.
Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.24These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and had a name as well as the three mighty men.
He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.25Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three; and David appointed him over his guard.
