Job 40
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
The LORD said to Job:1The LORD continued his response to Job by saying:
"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!"2"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer."
Then Job answered the LORD:3Then Job replied to the LORD. He said:
"I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.4"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless.
I spoke once, but I have no answer-- twice, but I will say no more."5I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore."
Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm:6The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him:
"Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.7"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!
"Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?8Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous?
Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his?9Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?"
Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.10"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity,
Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low,11dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person,
look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand.12stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are,
Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.13buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place,
Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.14then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!"
"Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.15"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox.
What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!16Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen.
Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.17His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength.
Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.18His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron.
It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.19He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword.
The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby.20Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic.
Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh.21He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes.
The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it.22The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him.
A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.23What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows.
Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose?24Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?"
