Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. | 1Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars. |
She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. | 2She has prepared her meat; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. |
She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, | 3She has sent out her female servants; she calls out from the highest points of the city:" |
"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, | 4Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says," |
"Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. | 5Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed. |
Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight." | 6Leave inexperience behind, and you will live; pursue the way of understanding. |
Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. | 7The one who corrects a mocker will bring dishonor on himself; the one who rebukes a wicked man will get hurt. |
Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. | 8Don't rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. |
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. | 9Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will learn more." |
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. | 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. |
For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. | 11For by Wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. |
If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. | 12If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences." |
Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. | 13The woman Folly is rowdy; she is gullible and knows nothing. |
She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, | 14She sits by the doorway of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, |
calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, | 15calling to those who pass by, who go straight ahead on their paths:" |
"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, | 16Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says," |
"Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!" | 17Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten secretly is tasty!" |
But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead. | 18But he doesn't know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. |
