and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. | 16and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Christ. |
Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations. |
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. | 18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit. |
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. | 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. |
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). | 23See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us." |
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her |
But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. | 25but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus. |
