| 2if the LORD had not been on our side, when men attacked us, | 2if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us, |
| 3they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger raged against us. | 3they would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against us; |
| 4The water would have overpowered us; the current would have overwhelmed us. | 4the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, |
| 5The raging water would have overwhelmed us. | 5the raging waters would have swept us away. |
| 6The LORD deserves praise, for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth. | 6Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. |
| 7We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunter's snare. The snare broke, and we escaped. | 7We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. |
| 8Our deliverer is the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. | 8Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. |
