Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out its seven pillars. | 1Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; |
She has prepared her meat, she has mixed her wine; she also has arranged her table. | 2She has prepared her food, she has mixed her wine; She has also set her table; |
She has sent out her female servants; she calls out on the highest places of the city. | 3She has sent out her maidens, she calls From the tops of the heights of the city: |
"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here," she says to those who lack understanding. | 4"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here!" To him who lacks understanding she says, |
"Come, eat some of my food, and drink some of the wine I have mixed. | 5"Come, eat of my food And drink of the wine I have mixed. |
Abandon your foolish ways so that you may live, and proceed in the way of understanding." | 6"Forsake your folly and live, And proceed in the way of understanding." |
Whoever corrects a mocker is asking for insult; whoever reproves a wicked person receives abuse. | 7He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. |
Do not reprove a mocker or he will hate you; reprove a wise person and he will love you. | 8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. |
Give instruction to a wise person, and he will become wiser still; teach a righteous person and he will add to his learning. | 9Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning. |
The beginning of wisdom is to fear the LORD, and acknowledging the Holy One is understanding. | 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. |
For because of me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. | 11For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. |
If you are wise, you are wise to your own advantage, but if you are a mocker, you alone must bear it. | 12If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it. |
The woman called Folly is brash, she is naive and does not know anything. | 13The woman of folly is boisterous, She is naive and knows nothing. |
So she sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, | 14She sits at the doorway of her house, On a seat by the high places of the city, |
calling out to those who are passing by her in the way, who go straight on their way. | 15Calling to those who pass by, Who are making their paths straight: |
"Whoever is simple, let him turn in here," she says to those who lack understanding. | 16"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here," And to him who lacks understanding she says, |
"Stolen waters are sweet, and food obtained in secret is pleasant!" | 17"Stolen water is sweet; And bread eaten in secret is pleasant." |
But they do not realize that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave. | 18But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of Sheol. |
