Then the LORD answered Job: | 1Then the LORD said to Job, |
"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let the person who accuses God give him an answer!" | 2"Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it." |
Then Job answered the LORD: | 3Then Job answered the LORD and said, |
"Indeed, I am completely unworthy--how could I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth to silence myself. | 4"Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth. |
I have spoken once, but I cannot answer; twice, but I will say no more." | 5"Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add nothing more." |
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm and said, |
"Get ready for a difficult task like a man. I will question you and you will inform me! | 7"Now gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you instruct Me. |
Would you indeed annul my justice? Would you declare me guilty so that you might be right? | 8"Will you really annul My judgment? Will you condemn Me that you may be justified? |
Do you have an arm as powerful as God's, and can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9"Or do you have an arm like God, And can you thunder with a voice like His? |
Adorn yourself, then, with majesty and excellency, and clothe yourself with glory and honor! | 10"Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity, And clothe yourself with honor and majesty. |
Scatter abroad the abundance of your anger. Look at every proud man and bring him low; | 11"Pour out the overflowings of your anger, And look on everyone who is proud, and make him low. |
Look at every proud man and abase him; crush the wicked on the spot! | 12"Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him, And tread down the wicked where they stand. |
Hide them in the dust together, imprison them in the grave. | 13"Hide them in the dust together; Bind them in the hidden place. |
Then I myself will acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. | 14"Then I will also confess to you, That your own right hand can save you. |
"Look now at Behemoth, which I made as I made you; it eats grass like the ox. | 15"Behold now, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; He eats grass like an ox. |
Look at its strength in its loins, and its power in the muscles of its belly. | 16"Behold now, his strength in his loins And his power in the muscles of his belly. |
It makes its tail stiff like a cedar, the sinews of its thighs are tightly wound. | 17"He bends his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are knit together. |
Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like bars of iron. | 18"His bones are tubes of bronze; His limbs are like bars of iron. |
It ranks first among the works of God, the One who made it has furnished it with a sword. | 19"He is the first of the ways of God; Let his maker bring near his sword. |
For the hills bring it food, where all the wild animals play. | 20"Surely the mountains bring him food, And all the beasts of the field play there. |
Under the lotus trees it lies, in the secrecy of the reeds and the marsh. | 21"Under the lotus plants he lies down, In the covert of the reeds and the marsh. |
The lotus trees conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream conceal it. | 22"The lotus plants cover him with shade; The willows of the brook surround him. |
If the river rages, it is not disturbed, it is secure, though the Jordan should surge up to its mouth. | 23"If a river rages, he is not alarmed; He is confident, though the Jordan rushes to his mouth. |
Can anyone catch it by its eyes, or pierce its nose with a snare? | 24"Can anyone capture him when he is on watch, With barbs can anyone pierce his nose? |
